DENALI BOROUGH,
RESOLUTION NO. 94-25
A RESOLUTION IN FAVOR OF
AN EASTERN ALTERNATIVE ROUTING OF THE
PROPOSED GVEA NORTHERN
INTERTIE.
WHEREAS, the Golden Valley Electric Association,
GVEA, is proposing to construct a 230 kV transmission line through the Ferry
area, and both the North and South alternative routes cross the Ferry Community
area; and
WHEREAS, the health dangers imposed by the EMF
emanating from high voltage transmission lines are currently under intensive
study, and are a cause of great concern; and
WHEREAS, the Ferry area is an important
recreational area for the Denali Borough and the Interior, for hunting,
backpacking, bicycling, etc.; and
WHEREAS, the Ferry area is known to have numerous
archaeological and historical
resources; and
WHEREAS, the economy of the Denali Borough is
partly supported by the tourist industry, and the proposed line and pylons will
be visible from both the Parks Highway and the Alaska Railroad tourist
corridors and will spoil an otherwise wild and scenic view; and
WHEREAS, the visual impact of such a large powerline will seriously diminish the quality of life and
value of local area homes; and
WHEREAS, the Ferry Community Association has
expressed opposition to GVEA's south and north route
alternatives; and
WHEREAS, in a meeting with GVEA on September 27,
1994, community members proposed an alternative routing from Lignite east for
approximately 15 miles, and then north directly to Fairbanks, a route which is
approximately the same distance as GVEA's proposed
routes and HAS NONE OF THE ABOVE IMPACTS.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: the Denali Borough Assembly requests that an
evaluation of an eastern alternate routing be included in the final draft of
the Northern Intertie Alternative Evaluation Study.
PASSED and APPROVED by the
day of October, 1994.
