Minutes of the Public Hearing

Denali Borough Assembly

August 11, 2002

 

CALL TO ORDER    Presiding Officer Jerry Mueller called the public hearing to order at 3:00 pm.

 

ROLL CALL               Assembly members present were: Jim Caswell, Jerry Mueller, Gerald Pollock, Teresa Hall, Teresa Usibelli, Dave Talerico, Sid Michaels, Jim Payne and Mayor Gonzales.   Absent was Carol Shields.

 

1.)   Ordinance 01-10, Version B, an ordinance amending the Denali Borough Charter, Article XI, Section 11.01, regarding a sales tax.  (Introduced by Assembly member Jerry Mueller)

 

Healy resident Neal Laugman stated that he objects to the borough imposing any new tax when the borough has land to sell.  He said there is no reason that the Borough can’t sell some land.  He said he realizes that the process is not as far along as they want to be.  He said he doesn’t think any of the tax ordinances except Stowell’s are honest.  He said its just more bureaucracy.  He said it would probably take another Borough employee to administer these tax ordinances.  He said his comments apply to all the tax ordinances.

 

MUELLER asked Mr. Braun, who signed up to testify if he would like to testify.  Mr. Braun said he would pass.

 

2.)   Ordinance 01-13, Version A, an ordinance establishing a 2% general Sales tax within the Denali Borough.  (Introduced by Assembly member Teresa Hall)

 

There were no comments.

 

3.) Ordinance 01-07, Version A, an ordinance amending the Denali Borough Code of Ordinances, adding Chapter 22, pertaining to business licenses.  

 

There were no comments.

 

 

4.) Ordinance 02-08, Version A, an ordinance creating Title IV, Chapter 27 of the Denali Borough Code of Ordinances providing for classification of Borough-owned land.

 

Healy resident Neal Laugman stated that he objects to the Mayor being the administrator of public lands.  He said he doesn’t think that a politician should be the administrator of public land.  He said other than that concern, he urged the Assembly to pass this ordinance.

 

ADJOURNMENT      MUELLER declared the Public Hearing adjourned at 3:10 pm.
