DENALI BOROUGH, ALASKA

RESOLUTION NO. 04-03

A RESOLUTION OF THE DENALI BOROUGH ASSEMBLY SUPPORTING THE CONTINUED OPERATION OF THE ANDERSON AND CLEAR POST OFFICES AND THE CONTINUED LEVEL OF CURRENT POSTAL SERVICE THROUGHOUT THE DENALI BOROUGH.

WHEREAS, Anderson is the only incorporated city in the Denali Borough, and

WHEREAS, the daily operation of a city is greatly hindered by the lack of Postal Service, and

WHEREAS, the Anderson Post Office hours have already been reduced by approximately 50%, and

WHEREAS, the Clear Post Office, located on a military installation (Clear Air Force Station) approximately six miles from the Anderson Post Office, is closed to the general public due to security concerns that have increased since September 11, 2001, and

WHEREAS, the closest other post offices are located 25 miles to the north and 35 miles to the south with no public transportation available, not even a taxi service, and

WHEREAS, winter temperatures of -40 and colder are common, making travel difficult and dangerous, and

WHEREAS, most military personnel residing on Clear Air Force Station are serving a remote tour and do not have transportation to commute to the Anderson Post Office, much less post offices at greater distances, and

WHEREAS, the Clear Post Office hours have likewise been cut by approximately 50%, and

WHEREAS, the City of Anderson is located 80 miles south of Fairbanks, so access to alternate means of shipping items by UPS, Airborne, FedEx and other shippers is very limited or completely unavailable, and

WHEREAS, all post offices in the Denali Borough are remote and potentially face the same problems as Anderson and Clear, and

WHEREAS, cutting hours or closing post offices in rural Alaska appears to be a current trend which places real hardship on the citizens affected, and

WHEREAS, the services of the U.S. Post Office are vital for the function of business, government and families within the Denali Borough, and

WHEREAS, the Denali Borough Assembly is seriously concerned about keeping the current level of postal service in the City of Anderson and throughout the Borough;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: that the Denali Borough Assembly strongly supports the continued operation of the Anderson Post Office, the Clear Post Office and all other post offices and postal services within the Denali Borough.
