DENALI BOROUGH, ALASKA
RESOLUTION NO. 93-12
A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF
LOWERING THE SPEED LIMIT FROM 55 MPH TO 45 MPH ON THE GEORGE PARKS HIGHWAY
THROUGH HEALY, ALASKA.
WHEREAS, the Denali Borough Assembly is interested
in maintaining the highest standard of living possible for its residents and
visitors; and
WHEREAS, the public safety aspect of the area is
calculated in this standard of living; and
WHEREAS, the George Parks Highway is the most
traversed transportation system linking two of the major cities and industrial
areas of the State, thus resulting in the daily transportation of goods by
Semi-trucks pulling single, double, and triple trailers; and
WHEREAS, the Healy area is also the gateway to
Denali National Park, therefore adding to its year round population, is an
additional transient work force and 8,000 daily travelers during the summer
months who visit this world renowned attraction; and
WHEREAS, there are children walking and riding
bikes to and from school on a regular basis who cross the George Parks Highway;
and
WHEREAS, there are many pedestrians traversing on
highway shoulders daily; and
WHEREAS, three life threatening accidents have
occurred within the "town limits" in the last year, the latest
resulting in two tragic fatalities;
AND WHEREAS, the similar neighboring communities
of Cantwell and Nenana currently have a reduced speed zone on the highway for
their communities.
BE IT RESOLVED:
that the Denali Borough Assembly supports the lowering of the speed
limit through the Healy area (White Moose Lodge (mile 248) through the Dry
Creek Bridge near Evans Industries (mile 250) from 55 mph to 45 mph.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: that the Denali Borough Assembly supports the placement of a
"Speed Zone Ahead" warning sign be posted at the top of Otto Lake
Hill warning northbound travelers of the upcoming speed change.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: that the Denali Borough Assembly supports the placement of a
yellow caution light at the intersection of the George Parks Highway, and the
Usibelli Spur Road warning travelers of this crossing.
